Plymouth Public Safety Citizens Academy Now Accepting Applications

Want an inside look at how police and fire departments keep the community safe? The City of Plymouth is now accepting applications for the 2025 Public Safety Citizens Academy — a free, 12-week course running Thursday evenings, 6–9 p.m., starting September 11.

Each week spotlights a different side of public safety, from police operations to fire response, through engaging presentations and hands-on demonstrations. Participants will learn directly from local public safety professionals, gaining a deeper understanding of their work and building stronger community connections.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and either live, work, volunteer, worship, participate in a community group, or own a business in Plymouth. All applicants must pass a background check (a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify you). Due to limited space, past participants will be placed on a waitlist to allow new community members to join.

Deadline to Apply: Friday, August 29, or until the class is full.

📍 Apply here: plymouthmn.gov/citizensacademy

📧 Contact: Community Relations Officer Kasey Abukar at [email protected] or 763-509-5135.

Plymouth Becomes First Minnesota City to Use AI for Tree Health Monitoring

The City of Plymouth is making history — and protecting its urban forest — by becoming the first city in Minnesota to use artificial intelligence to monitor tree health.

In partnership with Davey and Greehill Smart Tree Inventories, a specially equipped vehicle will roam Plymouth streets at low speeds this August, using advanced scanners to collect detailed data on the city’s approximately 40,000 public trees in parks, along roads, and in other community spaces.

The technology identifies early signs of stress, such as drooping leaves, that could signal disease, decay, or other issues. By pinpointing which trees are most at risk, the city can prioritize care, reduce storm damage, and lower long-term maintenance costs.

“This allows us to be proactive rather than reactive,” said City Forester Paul Buck. “We can focus on the 10–20% of trees that need attention now, instead of waiting for problems to worsen.”

The AI-powered approach can complete a citywide survey in just two to three weeks — a task that would take staff three to four months by hand and be more subjective. The project is funded through the city’s tree preservation funds, collected from developers when construction impacts trees.

Plymouth’s four-year contract includes a second scan in two years to track progress and inform future maintenance decisions. The same technology is already helping cities like Dallas, Las Vegas, and Burbank.
