Wayzata’s City Council Seat Is Open — Here’s How to Apply

Wayzata is looking for a new voice at the decision-making table.

Councilmember Jeff Parkhill is stepping down on September 23, 2025, as he and his family relocate out of state. His departure leaves a vacancy on the Wayzata City Council, and the City is inviting residents to step up and apply.

The basics: whoever is appointed will serve the rest of Parkhill’s term, which runs until December 31, 2026. The Council expects to make an appointment in October, so the application window is already open.

What does the role involve? City Council members shape the policies and priorities that guide Wayzata — from public safety and development to sustainability initiatives and city services. The position requires a meaningful time commitment, collaboration with fellow council members and staff, and most importantly, a genuine focus on serving the community. Prior government experience isn’t required; what matters is the desire to make a difference.

Applications are due by Monday, September 8, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. Interested residents can fill out an application here.

If you’ve got questions, City Clerk Kathy Leervig is the point of contact at (952) 404-5303 or [email protected].

Plymouth Brings Flowers Into the Arts This Fall and Winter

Plymouth is rolling out a new lineup of floral-inspired art programs this fall and winter, giving residents the chance to combine creativity with nature.

Hosted at the Plymouth Community Center (14800 34th Ave. N.), the workshops will be led by a local artist and master gardener. Each session incorporates flowers and greenery into the experience, offering everything from wreath-making to yoga-and-paint combos. Programs are open to adults 18 and older, unless noted otherwise, and all supplies are included in the registration fee.

Here’s what’s on the calendar:

  • Pick & Paint – Create a seasonal bouquet, paint it on canvas, and take both home.

    • All-ages class: Sunday, Sept. 7 (10 a.m.–12:30 p.m.)

    • Fall-focused class: Fridays, Sept. 19 & Oct. 24 (6–8:30 p.m.)

    • Holiday edition featuring poinsettias: Thursday, Nov. 13 (6–8 p.m.)

  • Yoga in the Garden: Flow to Canvas – A three-week series combining yoga in the Millennium Garden with painting the scenery. Sundays, Sept. 14, 21, 28 (10 a.m.–12 p.m.).

  • Paint the View – Stroll the Millennium Garden paths, then paint what you see. Wednesdays, Oct. 1 & 8 (1–3:30 p.m.).

  • Fall Wreath Making – Build your own autumn wreath with dried flowers and provided décor. Friday, Oct. 10 (6–8 p.m.).

  • Winter Wreath Making – Design a festive evergreen wreath with bows, décor, and sparkle. Thursday, Dec. 4 (6–8 p.m.).

Registration is open now at plymouthmn.gov/floralart.

Plymouth is turning art programming into something fresh and seasonal. Whether you’re into painting, gardening, or simply looking for a creative night out, these workshops blend nature and art in a way that’s designed to be hands-on, relaxing, and community-driven.

Donuts, Lemonade & Lake Views: North Star Donuts Joins James J. Hill Days

Wayzata’s biggest end-of-summer celebration is about to get even sweeter.

North Star Donuts will be popping up downtown during James J. Hill Days (Sept. 5–7), serving their famous apple cider mini donuts — hot, golden, and dusted in cinnamon sugar — all weekend long. If you needed another reason to hit Lake Street, this is it.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Apple Cider Mini Donuts – Made fresh on-site, served warm straight from the machine.

  • Crafted Cold Brew Flavors – Maple Salted Caramel, Bananas + Cream, Chocolate Pistachio, and Vanilla Sweet Cream.

  • New This Year: Maple Lemonades (freshly squeezed, fall-approved).

  • Frozen Cider Slushies – The ultimate fair-weather refresher.

📍Location: Downtown Wayzata on Lake Street near Barry Ave S. (by the train depot)

📅 Dates: Friday, Sept. 5 – Sunday, Sept. 7

🕓 Hours: Friday 5–10 p.m. | Saturday 10 a.m.–10 p.m. | Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

💵 Entry & Parking: Both free.

James J. Hill Days brings three days of food trucks, beer tents, live music, rides, and games — and North Star Donuts is firing up their donut machine right in the middle of it all.

It’s not just about donuts (though, let’s be honest, that’s reason enough). This is one of Wayzata’s signature community events, drawing thousands of people to the lakefront to close out summer together. Supporting vendors like North Star Donuts helps keep local food and fun at the heart of these traditions.
