📢 TALK OF THE TOWN

Wayzata Fire Department’s 8th annual pancake breakfast is back!

On Sunday, September 15, the Wayzata Fire Department is flipping pancakes like it’s their job. From 8 a.m. to noon at 600 Rice Street East, they’re serving up their 8th Annual Pancake Breakfast, and it’s going to be a feast you don’t want to miss.

Here’s what’s on the menu: pancakes (obviously), French toast, sausage, coffee, juice, and a raffle that’s sure to have the goods. All of this deliciousness is for a good cause—every cent goes straight to the Wayzata Fire Relief Association. They’re raising funds to keep our local heroes equipped with the best gear, making sure they stay safe and effective out there.

This tradition kicked off back in 2015, and took a short hiatus during the pandemic, but it’s back and stronger than ever. Last year, they served up breakfast to about 700-900 hungry locals, and this year, they’re aiming to keep that momentum going.

Wayzata Fire Chief Kevin Klapprich says every dollar raised is a game-changer for the department. So come hungry, leave happy, and know that your breakfast binge is making a real difference.

Oh, and if you’re feeling generous, donations are accepted at will—every bit helps keep our firefighters ready for anything.

Crime’s down, traffic’s tight, and e-bikes are in the spotlight.

Since 2023, Wayzata’s been on a winning streak with a 44% drop in crimes against society (think non-violent stuff like disorderly conduct and DUIs) and an 18% decrease in property crimes. That’s definitely progress worth celebrating.

June was all about zero tolerance for bad driving. The Wayzata Police Department (WPD) went full throttle on the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative, targeting the big four: inattention/distraction, impairment, speeding, and seat belt usage.

They’ve stepped up the game with bike patrols and extra eyes on the road all summer long. Oh, and they’re cracking down on noise too—new signs are up to keep things peaceful. Traffic citations and warnings? Up by 10% since last year.

E-bikes are the new hot topic, but with all the different classifications and rules, it’s a bit of a Wild West out there. WPD is getting ahead of the curve by posting signs around the Lakewalk and Panoway to remind bikers to slow down and keep off the Lakewalk. They’re also diving deeper into research to figure out the best way to manage the e-bike boom in Wayzata.

Plymouth is selling rain barrels and compost bins at a steal.

If you’re into saving the planet (and some cash), listen up. The City of Plymouth is hooking residents up with reduced-cost rain barrels and compost bins, but only while supplies last.

Rain barrels are a smart move—they catch all that free rainwater for your garden and landscaping. The model on offer? It’s got a sleek flat-back design, a garden hose with a shut-off valve, and an aluminum mesh screen to keep the mosquitoes out.

Compost bins are the unsung heroes of gardening. They cut down on waste and give your plants a natural boost. The bin in this sale isn’t just your average store-bought model—it’s got a wide top opening with a lockable lid and sliding doors on the side for easy access.

Both of these eco-friendly products are made from 100% recycled plastic, thanks to Plymouth’s partnership with the Recycling Association of Minnesota.

The Deal: Here’s what you’re looking at:

  • Rain Barrel (45-gallon): $97.67 (usually retails around $120)

  • Compost Bin (125-gallon): $82.48 (typically sells for $100)

Want to snag one? You’ve got options. You can buy online or swing by Plymouth City Hall with cash, check, or card.

After you’ve locked in your purchase, head over to the Plymouth Maintenance Facility (14900 23rd Ave. N.) between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to grab your gear. Don’t forget to bring your receipt.

How to Buy Online:

  • Hit the “Quick Pay” button

  • Enter your payment info

  • Select “Misc./Other” under “Payment Details”

  • Type in “Compost Bin” or “Rain Barrel”

  • Enter the correct amount ($82.48 or $97.67)

  • Process your payment

For more info, hit up Water Resources Supervisor Ben Scharenbroich at 763-509-5527. If you run into any issues with the online process, give the Utility Billing team a call at 763-509-5333.

Don’t sleep on this—get your rain barrel or compost bin before they’re all gone!
